What does the Bible mean when it speaks of redemption?
In this episode of Relentless Truth, John Warren continues the series Getting the Gospel Right by examining one of the great themes of Scripture: redemption. The biblical idea is that of paying a ransom that frees a person from captivity—to purchase, liberate, or set free.
Scripture describes our condition as slavery to sin, with Jesus Christ as our Redeemer and His blood as the ransom price. Redemption means that those who were captive have been purchased and set free—and now belong to God.
Romans 3 brings these truths together. All have sinned and fall short of God's glory, yet we are justified by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus. The price of our redemption was not our works, goodness, or religious accomplishments. Christ gave Himself for us, and this gift is received by faith.
John also considers what redemption means for Christians who continue to struggle with guilt and regret. If Christ has paid the ransom and liberated us from our captivity to sin, should we continue living as though we are still prisoners? Our sin should never be taken lightly, but neither should we diminish the finished work of Christ by refusing to believe that His payment was sufficient.
We were enslaved to sin. Christ gave Himself as the ransom price. Through Him we have redemption and forgiveness. The redeemed now belong to God.
Praise God for the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.
