The Plight and Promise of Man
Why is the world so broken—and why can't we simply try harder and make ourselves better?
In this episode of Relentless Truth, John Warren continues the Getting the Gospel Right series by examining the plight of fallen humanity and the extraordinary hope found in Jesus Christ.
Human beings were created in the image of God with dignity, responsibility, and the ability to make meaningful choices. But the Fall changed mankind and the world in which we live. Sin brought spiritual death, broken relationships, difficulty, suffering, and separation from God. And no amount of human effort or determination can justify us before Him. RTM254-transcript
At the root of Adam and Eve's rebellion was self-reliance—the belief that God's provision was not enough and that they could trust themselves instead of God. That same tendency toward self-sufficiency remains at the heart of our own rebellion. RTM254-transcript
But the plight of mankind is not the end of the story. Romans 5 contrasts Adam with Christ: Adam's disobedience brought sin and death, while Christ's obedience brings righteousness and life. RTM254-transcript
Our great hope is Jesus Christ, who conquered sin and death. For those who are in Christ, our plight is no longer desperate. We have grace, mercy, peace, eternal life, and a future with our Lord. RTM254-transcript
