Can we really know that we are saved? Or must Christians live with uncertainty about their eternal destiny?
There is an implicit doctrine in much of evangelicalism that leaves people thinking they cannot have assurance of salvation. Some believe salvation can be lost if their performance isn't up to par. Others wonder whether they can know that they are among the elect and therefore ultimately saved.
In this episode of Relentless Truth, we examine what Scripture teaches about the confidence we can and should have in Christ.
Jesus declares in John 5:24 that whoever hears His word and believes Him who sent Him has eternal life and has passed from death to life. And in 1 John 5:13, the apostle John tells believers that they may know that they have eternal life.
We'll examine the biblical foundations of assurance, including the person of Christ, His finished work on Calvary, the promises of God's Word, personal trust in Christ, the witness of the Holy Spirit, and the evidence of a growing Christian life.
We'll also consider the hindrances to assurance, including doubts and fears, habitual sin, subjective introspection, doctrinal errors, and failure to understand God's promises.
Our salvation does not depend on human performance. It is entirely by the grace of God through Jesus Christ. Yet Scripture also calls believers to examine their lives and grow in Christian character.
Yes, we can have confidence before God because of the finished work of Jesus Christ our Lord.
