Can We Be Certain of Eternal Life
Can We Be Certain of Eternal Life?
Relentless Truth with John Warren | Episode RTM260
Can a Christian truly know that he or she has eternal life? Why do so many genuine believers struggle with doubts about their salvation? And what does Scripture actually teach about having full assurance of faith?
In this episode of Relentless Truth, John Warren continues the series Getting the Gospel Right, examining the biblical foundations of assurance and the obstacles that frequently undermine a believer's confidence in Christ.
Drawing from Hebrews 10, Romans, 1 John, and other New Testament passages, John explains why assurance must rest on the person and finished work of Jesus Christ rather than our feelings, religious experiences, or personal performance.
Hindrances to AssuranceMany Christians struggle with uncertainty because they have been taught to look inward rather than to Christ and the promises of Scripture.
John examines four common obstacles:
- Excessive introspection: Looking to our own feelings, faith, or performance rather than the objective promises of God.
- Passive waiting: Believing that assurance is unknowable or that we must simply wait to discover whether we are among God's elect.
- Reliance on a conversion experience: Assuming that salvation must be validated by remembering the precise date, time, or circumstances of conversion—or by having prayed a particular prayer.
- Insufficient knowledge of Scripture: Failing to understand and trust the biblical promises concerning salvation.
John identifies six essential considerations that help believers develop a confident understanding of their salvation.
1. The Person of Jesus Christ
Our assurance begins with understanding who Jesus Christ is: God incarnate, the eternal Son who became flesh to accomplish our redemption.
John 1:14–18
2. The Finished Work of Christ
Salvation rests entirely on Christ's completed work at Calvary—not our religious activities, personal accomplishments, or efforts to earn God's acceptance.
3. The Word of God
A growing knowledge of Scripture strengthens our confidence in God's promises. Careful Bible study helps believers distinguish biblical truth from misleading teachings and subjective experiences.
4. Personal Trust in Christ
Assurance involves personally trusting Jesus Christ and His saving work, rather than merely identifying with Christianity or participating in religious activities.
5. The Witness of the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit bears witness that believers are God's children. Our adoption into God's family provides a profound foundation for confidence in our relationship with Him.
6. The Witness of a Growing Christian Life
Although salvation is entirely by grace through faith, spiritual growth and the development of Christian character can strengthen our subjective assurance.
Peter emphasizes the importance of increasing in virtue, knowledge, self-control, steadfastness, godliness, brotherly affection, and love.
2 Peter 1:3–10
Assurance Does Not Require a Doubt-Free LifeEven mature Christians experience doubts, fears, discouragement, and spiritual struggles.
The biblical answer is not to strive for perfect feelings or flawless performance. Instead, believers are encouraged to return continually to God's Word, understand His character, and rest in the sufficiency of Christ's finished work.
John also addresses how habitual sin, false teaching, and the prosperity gospel can undermine a believer's confidence in God's promises.
The central message is straightforward: Our assurance rests ultimately in the faithfulness of God, not in the strength of our own performance.
